The University Certificate Courses are provided through one of the most advanced distance learning platforms worldwide, at the University of Strasbourg, CEIPI. Participants are flexible in their education. Learning without time pressure, as well as with a job and family are possible. With the modular system of these Certificates, participants can learn only what they currently need or strive for the Diplôme Universitaire IP Business Administration after completing all eight courses. Every Certificate can be attended as a stand-alone course. All courses refer to each other in terms of content, management skills and practice implications. From the consistent glossary to examples and explanation style, these certificates provide a comprehensive perspective on every topic but also an up to date overview on modern IP Management. The students benefit from a long-standing teaching practice in IP-Management which has been established at CEIPI since 2005. The worldwide network of Alumni, successful companies and excellent teachers from prestigious universities speak for itself.

These certificates are more than just a delivery of content. They provide a holistic approach on IP Management with solid theoretical basis and prevailing up to date insight in industry practice. These certificate courses help participants to implement the knowledge gained in their daily practice. Successful implementations are presented within published industry case studies. This IP-Management education is academically accredited, neutral, unbiased, and comprehensive industry wide. The courses are based on current research projects with university and industry partners to provide the best knowledge available about successful IP-Management. The provided learning material is optimized for distance learning, and integrated within the whole program. Movies, lectures, scripts, glossaries and additional teaching material are given to ensure, that participants can follow all certificates with integrated and consistent content.

Application and Admission (diplomas)

An admissions committee composed of teachers and professionals examines the applications in order to verify the candidate's level of knowledge of the English language and his or her level of study. Bachelor's degree required.

Duration

Two years of academic education take place in one of the most advanced distance learning platforms worldwide, at the University of Strasbourg, CEIPI.

It is comprised of eight University Certificates on IP-Management, which can be acquired in four semesters, alongside work under continuous supervision and accompaniment.

Time schedule:

  • 1st year starting October 01st, 2021 until September 30, 2022
  • 2nd year starting October 2022

The lecture time of a certificate course corresponds to ten teaching units of 1.5 hours each during semesters. In addition to the lecture movies, participants will also receive self-study material, tutorials, collaborative exchange, feedback and a continuous monitoring of their learning progress. In one academic year, four certificate courses must be completed, equivalent to about 60 hours of lessons or 1.5 hours of teaching and learning per week during the semester. IP Strategy Development

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding strategy, its aspects and its relevance for the success of companies
  • Understanding the strategic aspects of IP and its role in strategic management
  • Understanding generic IP-Strategies and their correlation with business models
  • Understanding the interdependency of different IP functions, impacts, appropriation, and economic effects which can be used in IP strategies.
  • Understanding the limits of protection, exclusivity, and enforceability

IP Valuation (I)

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the role of decision making for valuation issues
  • Understanding the concept of value and the context dependence of values
  • Understanding different valuation approaches and procedures
  • Understanding the role of valuation context and valuation model 

Integrated IP and Innovation Management

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the impact and different types of innovation and related management implications
  • Understanding the process of technology diffusion and change
  • Understanding the emergence of dominant designs and their impact on industries
  • Understanding process organization and optimization
  • Understanding the integration of IP within the innovation process and innovation landscaping

IP in the Industry 4.0

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the disruptive power of digital transformation
  • Understanding the logic and construction of digital business models, platforms and eco-systems
  • Understanding the role of IP within digital business models, customer journeys and value-added architecture
  • Understanding the application of digital patents to protect digital business models
  • Understanding the taxonomy of digital invention principles and claim structures of digital patents

IP Valuation (II)

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the methods and tools which are available for valuation purposes
  • Understanding the concepts of uncertainty and risk and having practical solutions at hand to perform valuations
  • Understanding patent and trademark valuation
  • Understanding the role of IP within tax and corporate financing issues

Quality in Operational IP Management

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the principles of business organization and ways to optimize organizational structures
  • Understanding the stakeholders and business process landscape of operational IP management
  • Understanding the role of information and IT as a driving force for business process management
  • Understanding the interplay of service providers and IP departments 
  • Understanding the concept of quality and the ways to introduce it into IP management

IP Portfolio Management and Controlling

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the development and business application of IP portfolios
  • Understanding the business impact of IP portfolios
  • Understanding the concept of management control systems
  • Understanding intangible and IP management control systems
  • Understanding the logic of strategy maps and balanced scorecards for IP management

Leadership in IP management

Key Learning Targets:

  • Understanding the fallacies of decision making and the concept of limited rationality
  • Understanding human resource management approaches to improve the workforce
  • Understanding leadership concepts and the idea of situational leadership
  • Understanding the role of valuation context and valuation model 
  • Understanding teamwork and motivation as tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness of workforce
  • Understanding the concept of design thinking for motivating innovation

Distance learning over 2 years - candidates train at their own pace in 4 modules of 15 hours per year.

Type of training and certification

  • This training leads to a University Diploma, provided you pass the final exam at the end of the 2 years of distance learning
  • A questionnaire is distributed to participants at the end of the training to evaluate their satisfaction.

Examination

a. Nature of examination

The course, divided into eight modules over two years, can be completed either in its entirety, leading to a university degree or module by module.
In order to obtain the diploma, the knowledge will be validated at the end of each module by an online examination (to be validated within a period of 15 minutes. Each questionnaire gives rise to a score of 20). The final validation of the diploma is subject to the passing of a final examination at the end of the second year, either in person or online.

Each of the modules can also be taken independently, without then being able to qualify for the diploma but to a simple certificate of participation.

Hourly volume: 15 hours of teaching per module or 60 hours per academic year and 15 hours of personal work per module or 60 hours per academic year. The training thus represents 120 hours of work per year.

b. The coefficients

Each Multiple Choice Questionnaire is assigned a coefficient of 1. The final examination is assigned a coefficient of 3.

c. Conditions for success

Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 10/20 in each module and on the final examination.

d. The composition of the jury

Members of the teaching team will make up the jury.

Registration Fees for year 2021/2022

Continuing education (including university fees): FOR PROFESSIONNALS

  • 3 250 € for one year of distance learning (4 modules) during the academic year
  • 6,500 € for two years of distance learning (8 modules) during the academic year.

Initial training (excluding university fees): FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ONLY

  • 1 500 € for one year of distance learning (4 modules) during the academic year
  • 3 000 € for two years of distance learning (8 modules) during the academic year.

Payment of the "Contribution vie étudiante et de campus (CVEC)" via the website MesServices.Etudiant.gouv.fr is mandatory for each student in Standard University enrolled in a higher education establishment.

For this degree, students are not eligible for a scholarship.
