CEIPI Public Lecture: Patents and Public Health: Legal, Economic and Public Policy Aspects of Access to Medicines

Within the framework of the series of lectures : "(RE)thinking Intellectual Property, Fundamental Questions and New Perspectives" CEIPI invite you to the public lecture to be held the 11 October at 5 pm.

Jerome H. Reichman, Professor at the Duke University School of Law, Durnham, North Carolina (U.S.) will give a presentation on the topic :

"Patents and Public Health:  Legal, Economic, and Public Policy Aspects of Access to Medicines".

The conference will be in English.

Séverine Dusollier, Professor of Law at the University of Namur (Belgium) and Head of the Research Centre for IT Law (CRID) will give a presentation on the topic :

epi Interview with Christophe Geiger

You may download an Interview with Christophe Geiger, General Director of CEIPI, after the close of the CEIPI conference, "Towards a European Patent Court" held in Strasbourg at the European Parliament on 16 and 17 April 2010.

This interview was published in the magazine epi Information n° 2, from June 2010, edited by the the EPI (Institute of Patent Attorneys registered with the European Patent Office).

Publications in the CEIPI Collection

We are pleased to inform you of a new publication in the CEIPI collection (Lexis-Nexis-Litec Edition) : "Copyright and property law" by Christel Simler.

This thesis was defended in 2008 under the supervision of Yves Reboul, Professor at the University of Strasbourg and Honorary General Director of CEIPI and Christophe Caron Professor at the  University of Paris XII.

Moreover, we are pleased to inform you of the upcoming publication in the CEIPI Collection of the proceedings of the conference held in honour of Professor Yves Reboul "Challenges of trademark law in the 21st century."

Trademark law, like the rest of intellectual property law, is experiencing an unprecedented transformation at the begining of the 21st century. It faces new challenges that this collective work edited by Christophe Geiger, Associate Professor and General Director of CEIPI and Joanna Schmidt-Szalewski Professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg and former head of the CEIPI Research Laboratory, proposes to study.

CEIPI Employment Offer: Post-doctoral legal scholar in Intellectual Property Law

CEIPI is looking for a post-doctoral legal scholar specializing in intellectual property law with a French and/or international background. The successful candidate is expected to actively take part in ongoing research at the CEIPI, especially in the framework of European and international research projects.

Two new research assistants at the CEIPI

Jérôme De Meeus and Franciska Schönherr have been newly recruited as research assistants as from September 01, 2010.

They will write thesis under the supervision of Christophe Geiger, General Director of the CEIPI.  Jérôme De Meeus will write on the topic "Intellectual property rights and the challenges of climate change", and Franciska Schönherr on the topic "The possible construction of a European copyright system".

Enrolment to the Master of Intellectual Property Law and Management (MIPLM)

Enrolment to the Master of Intellectual Property Law and Management (MIPLM) for the year 2010-2011 is now open. This Master is intended to IP experts and lawyers with three years experience in the Intellectual Property field.

The training comprises a period of six months from january to june 2011.

CEIPI Summer School on IP in Europe

The CEIPI hosted its second Summer Seminar on intellectual property in Europe, July 5th-10th, 2010.

This year 22 participants from China were able to expand their knowledge of European intellectual property law. The CEIPI is delighted with the success of this event. It will be held again next year.

Some participants accompanied by Christopher Geiger, General Director of the CEIPI and Thierry Sueur, Vice-President of Air Liquide, President of Patents at Business Europe and instructor at the CEIPI Summer Seminar and Isabelle Christ, Head of International Cooperation at the CEIPI.

CEIPI's European Tutor's Meeting

The 21st Ceipi's European Tutor's Meeting was held in Strasbourg on June 10 and 11, 2010 within the framework of the Basic training course.

The basic training course provides future practitioners in the patent field with systematic and complete tuition on the legal basis as well as on practice in the area of European patent law. For many years now, CEIPI and epi have been jointly organising a basic European patent law training course, principally aimed at future cerfified EPO agents.

Annual cocktail of the AACEIPI (Alumni Association of CEIPI)

The annual cocktail of the AACEIPI (Alumni Association of CEIPI) will be held in Paris on December 02, 2010.

You may download the enrolment form to be sent to the secretary of the AACEIPI, Mr Jean-Paul Combenègre.

The AACEIPI is an association whose purpose is to promote the development of the Centre for International Studies in Intellectual Property. Accordingly, it assists with the organization of conferences, symposia, internships and training sessions. In addition, it endeavors to help and encourage the students and the graduates of the CEIPI.

Christophe Geiger at the ISHTIP conference in Washington: Geographies of Intellectual Property

Christophe Geiger, General Director of CEIPI, has participated as discussant to the second annual workshop of the ISHTIP (International Society for the History and Theory of Intellectual Property) that was held in Washington between September, 24 and 26, 2010 on the topic "Geographies of Intellectual Property".

Christophe Geiger at the conference of the Trademark Law Institute in Amsterdam

Christophe Geiger, General Director of CEIPI will participate at the conference of the "Trademark Law Institute" to be held the 15 and 16 October 2010 at the VU University of Amsterdam : "The Protection of Trademarks with a Reputation". Christophe Geiger will give a presentation on the topic "Determining the Scope of Protection: The Need to take Freedom of Expression into account.

Franck Macrez at the CUERPI Conference: Structure of intellectual property rights

The CUERPI (Centre Universitaire d'Enseignement et de Recherches en Propriété Intellectuelle) is hosting a conference on the 19th of November 2010, in Grenoble : « Structure of intellectual property rights ».

Franck Macrez, Assistant Professor at the CEIPI will present a paper on software in the context of a round table discussion on « complex objects ».

Six CEIPI Lecturers Elected Judges of the Swiss Federal Patent Court

On March, 19, 2009 the Fedral Assembly of the Swiss Confederation voted the creation of a Federal Patent Court. This court is composed of judges with a technical background and a legal background. The judges of this new court have been choosen on June,16, 2010 and six of them take part to the different CEIPI courses.

  • Tobias Bremi, elected Vice-Président of the Court, obtained the CEIPI "Patent Course" Diploma in  2000 ; he is tutor to the preprep courses and the seminars preparing to the EQE, paper "D" ;
  • Erich Wäckerlin is coordinator and tutor to the preprep courses and the seminars preparing to the EQE, papers "AB" and "C" ;
  • Natalia Clerc is a former tutor to the epi /CEIPI basic training course ;
  • Kurt Sutter is lecturer to the epi/CEIPI course Patent Litigation in Europe ;
  • Christophe Saam is a lecturer to the epi/CEIPI course Patent Litigation in Europe, and
  • Frank S. Schnyder, ("Ersatzrichter/Fachrichter"), is a lecturer to the Basic Training Course in Lausanne

Yves Lapierre Appointed General Director of the INPI

On August, 25, 2010, Yves Lapierre has been apppointed General Director of the INPI (French National Institute for Industrial Property ) .
