Signature of a memorandum of understanding between the European Patent Office (EPO) and the CEIPI-University of Strasbourg, in Paris, June 1, 2012. The co-operation in training in European patent law is strengthened
A memorandum of understanding between the EPO and the CEIPI was signed on Friday, June 1, 2012 in Paris at the Administrative board meeting of the CEIPI hosted by the INPI by the President of the University of Strasbourg, Alain Beretz and the President of the European Patent Office, Benoît Battistelli, in presence of the members of the Administrative Board of the CEIPI and particularly its President, Francis Gurry as well as the Director General of the CEIPI, Christophe Geiger.
Since the establishment of the European Patent Office, the EPO and the CEIPI have always had close ties in the area of training in European patent law and especially in the preparation of the European qualifying examination.
This important memorandum signals a new stage in the co-operation between the two institutions and it will govern all the activities involving experts from the EPO. The common programmes dedicated to the training of candidates for the European qualifying examination and the continuing education of representatives, shall be merged under the heading “Euro-Ceipi”. In this respect, the agreement will further the objective of insuring the first class expertise of European industrial property professionals.

Enhanced mobility for doctoral students should also be encouraged by this agreement.

Presentations and Videos of the Presentations at the Conference : What Patent Law for the European Union? 26-27 April 2012 at the European Parliament
On April 26 and 27, 2012, the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) organized a conference at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the topic: "What Patent Law for the European Union?" coordinated by Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, and under the high patronage of Catherine Trautmann, Member of the European Parliament.
The European Patent System stands at crossroads. Whereas an agreement on the European Union patent was expected, the creation of such an instrument has encountered certain difficulties. As a consequence, the European institutions decided to implement a European patent with “unitary effect” through the mechanism of enhanced co-operation. At the same time, the Court of Justice of the European Union (the CJUE) issued a negative opinion on the legislative proposals to create a European Patent Court. The need to reflect on the future of the patent system in the European Union is felt as never before.
In this perspective, the CEIPI has brought together renowned academics, eminent professionals, judges as well as institutional representatives in the intellectual property field for a conference on the question: “What Patent Law for the European Union?”
