CEIPI Conference on 26-27 April 2012 at the European Parliament: What Patent Law for the European Union?

On April 26 and 27, 2012, the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) is organizing a conference at the European Parliament of Strasbourg on the topic: "What Patent Law for the European Union?" coordinated by Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, and under the high patronage of Catherine Trautmann, Member of the European Parliament.

Establishing a flexible legal framework for limitations and exceptions to copyright at international level
Statement by Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, at the Twenty-Third Session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
From November 21 to December 2, 2011, a delegation of CEIPI participated in work of the twenty-third session of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Christophe Geiger, Director General of CEIPI, made a statement welcoming the progress made by the SCCR on the issue of limitations and exceptions. He endorsed further work towards establishment of an appropriate international framework on limitations and exceptions for the benefit of visually impaired persons with print disabilities as well as for libraries and archives. While acknowledging the achievements made, he stressed that for the purpose of attaining the desired balance between all interests involved, a flexible international framework on limitations and exceptions should be established.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Forthcoming Research Handbook edited by Christophe Geiger, Director General of CEIPI, on Criminal Enforcement of Intellectual Property
This Research Handbook is the first to offer a systematic review of the framework for criminal enforcement of intellectual property rights, providing a broad survey of the field and a platform for further research.
The publication is planned for spring, 2012.

New Publication in the CEIPI Collection: Caroline Rodà, "Civil Consequences of Infringement of Industrial Property Rights"
We are pleased to inform you of a new publication in the CEIPI collection (Lexis-Nexis-Litec Edition) :
"Civil Consequences of Infringement of Industrial Property Rights" by Caroline Rodà, Post-doctoral legal scholar at the CEIPI (with a foreword by Joanna Schmidt-Szalewski, Professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg).
This book is the updated version of a doctorate thesis defended by Caroline Rodà at the University of Strasbourg under the supervision of Joanna Schmidt-Szalewski.
This study attempts to determine, on the one hand, whether Directive 2004/48/EC is likely to strengthen the respect for industrial property rights and, on the other hand, whether the initiative of the European authorities led to the harmonization of French, Belgian, Luxembourg, German and English law regarding the civil consequences of infringement of industrial property rights.

CEIPI Research Seminars
The CEIPI is organizing monthly seminars as part of its research activity. The sessions are open to faculty, doctoral students and graduates of the doctoral program of the CEIPI. These seminars are held under the responsibility of Stéphanie Carre, Associate Professor at the CEIPI, University of Strasbourg.
In each session, a participant presents original research which is then open to discussion. Certain seminars also deal with intellectual property news.
The previous seminar took place on Monday, January 9, 2012 at 05.30 at the CEIPI Library. Mr. Theodoros Chiou, doctoral student at the CEIPI, presented his thesis works in a talk entitled "Towards a European Law governing Licensing Contracts in Intellectual Property Rights".
The next seminar will take place in February. Thibaud Lelong, doctoral student at the CEIPI, will present his thesis works: "Intellectual property and financial instruments" (the exact date will be communicated very soon on the CEIPI website).
Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, at the conference "Ten Years after the EU Directive on Copyright in the Information Society: Looking Back and Looking Forward" at the European Parliament in Brussels
Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, will participate to the conference "Ten Years after the EU Directive on Copyright in the Information Society: Looking Back and Looking Forward" organized by the CRIDS (Research Center Information and Society) and the IViR (Institue for Information Law, University of Amsterdam) to be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on January 13, 2012.
Christophe Geiger will give a presentation on the topic: "New competences. The Lisbon Treaty and the Charter on Fundamental Rights: consequences for EU copyright policy".

Upcoming CEIPI Public Lectures
We inform you of two upcoming public lectures at the CEIPI within the framework of the series of lectures : "(RE)thinking Intellectual Property, Fundamental Questions and New Perspectives".
Daniel Gervais, Professor at the Vanderbilt Law School (USA) and Visiting Professor at the CEIPI, will give a presentation on March 19, 2012 on the topic "Creators and Internet: What Evolutions for Copyright Law at the International Level?".
Stef van Gompel, postdoc researcher at the IViR (Institute for Information Law), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) will give a presentation on April 2, 2012 on the topic "Looking ahead: Reinstating formalities as a means for addressing some key challenges in today's copyright law".

New CEIPI Series of Lectures : Institutional, political and social perspectives on intellectual property
CEIPI organises a new series of lectures in order to give a voice to eminent members of national, international and European institutions, political representatives as well as members of the civil society so as to enable them to express their point of view and to debate with experts of intellectual property law.

Christophe Geiger, Director General of the CEIPI, has participated to the workshop of the "Global Research Network on Copyright Flexibilities in National Legal Reform" jointly organized by the Institute for Information Law, University of Amsterdam and the American University Washington College of Law Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property.
The workshop took place between December 18 and 20, 2011 at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
Thesis Defense by Yann Basire: The functions of a Trade Mark: Essay on the Coherence of the Legal Regime Governing a Distinctive Sign
We are pleased to announce that on December 6, 2011, Mr Yann Basire became Doctor of law at the University of Strasbourg with a thesis on the topic: "The Functions of a Trade Mark: Essay on the Coherence of the Legal Regime Governing a Distinctive Sign" written under the supervision of Yves Reboul, Professor at the CEIPI, University of Strasbourg.
The jury was composed of Laure Marino, Professor at the University of Strasbourg, Jérôme Passa, Professor at the University of Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas, Frédéric Pollaud-Dullian, Professor at the University of Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne, Jacques Raynard, Aggregate Professor at the University of Montpellier 1 and Professor Yves Reboul.

CEIPI Students Master Thesis

EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES
International Section / Preparation for the EQE
For the European Qualifying Examination 2012, the CEIPI offers a program of exam preparation courses consisting of "Introductory Courses" in a number of different cities in Europe, as well as "Preparatory Seminars" in Strasbourg.
Like every year, these seminars bring together participants from numerous European countries. The tutors are legal practitioners of various nationalities and professional backgrounds (industry, private practice, Members of the EPO).
Thus, since the autumn of 2011, introductory courses ("Pre-prep"), preparatory seminars on Papers A, B and C and (for the first time) a seminar for the EQE pre-examination 2012, took place. The seminar on legal questions (D-paper) will be held twice from 9 to 13 January 2012 and from 23 to 27 January 2012. In parallel, the basic courses offered in coordination with the epi (Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office) for the future practitioners are organized in 36 European cities.

China-EU School of Law : Seminar in Beijing for Chinese prosecutors on the topic "Crimes Relevant to Intellectual Property Law"
Within the framework of the China-EU School of Law program, the CEIPI (University of Strasbourg) and the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law in Munich, jointly organized a seminar for Chinese prosecutors on the topic "Crimes Relevant to Intellectual Property Law".

MISCELLANEOUS
The CEIPI's job and internship offers
CEIPI is recruiting a Post-doctoral legal scholar specialized in intellectual property with a French and/or international background. The successful candidate is expected to actively take part in ongoing research at the CEIPI, especially in the framework of European and international research projects.
We are also looking for a graduate (Master 2 or LLM) in the field of innovation law and the economics of intellectual property and for a legal scholar with a Master 2 or LL.M. in intellectual property law.
Finally, the CEIPI is looking for a legal intern expected to advance the educational and resarch missions of the CEIPI.
